USMC IMTV: Gen 2
Though it is a huge upgrade from the first generation, the USMC IMTV: Gen 2, falls short in several key areas. The bulkiness can limit mobility, which is critical in tactical situations where fluidity is essential.
Moreover, the fit leaves much to be desired. While it is adjustable, I have found it to still be generally uncomfortable, leading to constant readjustments and distractions in the field. This can be frustrating, especially when you need to focus on your mission rather than your gear.
Durability is another area where the IMTV struggles. Although it’s made from quality materials, several users have noted wear and tear in high-stress environments. The stitching does not hold up as expected, when heavily used. This is a huge issue because the main user, the Marine Rifleman, uses it extensively.
It is a very basic carrier and can generally be seen as a template for how many plate carriers are designed. But this also limits its potential. It can easily create a cluttered and disorganized setup, because of the design. When every second counts, fumbling with gear becomes a liability.
In terms of comfort, the padding is very limited. Especially after a longer period of time it is almost as if there just isn’t any at all and it is just added weight and material. the cummerbunds especially are very uncomfortable. the hard plastic meant to keep the shape often rips through the material and can push into your sides.
There is also an excess in material in areas that do not need it. I would wear a small one because it would fit better due to the added material. Especially with the change to the M27, which has a larger buttstock, it became much harder to properly should the weapon because it would get caught on the carrier constantly. The only way to get around this is by modifying it a bit with 550 cord the pull the material in, but it shouldn’t resort to that.
Ultimately, while the USMC IMTV: Gen 2 has potential with its versatile design, its execution leaves much to be desired. The combination of weight, fit, durability issues, and comfort problems diminishes its effectiveness, making it more of a hassle than a useful tactical asset.
